Legacy
The Tata Trusts are among the oldest and largest philanthropic institutions in Asia. Established over 130 years ago, the Trusts have contributed to the development of institutions, capabilities and systems that have shaped India's social, scientific, educational and developmental landscape. The Tata Trusts hold approximately 66% of the equity in Tata Sons, with dividends received from the company flowing through the Trusts to support philanthropic initiatives and public good.
Long before organised philanthropy came into being in India, the Trusts worked to expand opportunity and strengthen the country's capacity to shape its own future. That belief continues to guide our work today.
The Trusts' interventions have evolved with the country's changing needs. From establishing institutions that have advanced scientific research, healthcare, higher education and the arts to supporting innovations that have opened new possibilities, strengthened capabilities where they were needed most, and working alongside communities to address some of the country's most enduring development challenges, our purpose has remained constant: to contribute to a stronger, more equitable and more resilient nation.
Today, the Tata Trusts work across much of India, partnering with communities in remote villages, small towns and urban centres alike. Our work spans health, nutrition, education, livelihoods, water, sanitation and hygiene, climate resilience, sports, arts and culture, while continually responding to emerging challenges and opportunities.
A defining feature of the Trusts’ work is their focus on long-term transformation. Programmes are designed to leave behind people, institutions and systems capable of sustaining outcomes long after the need for support ends.
Collaboration is central to this approach. The Trusts work with governments, civil society organisations, academic and research institutions, communities and the private sector to develop solutions grounded in local realities and capable of creating wider change. Across all our work, the ambition remains the same: to build not merely for the present, but for the future by strengthening the people, institutions and systems that enable communities and the country to progress with greater opportunity, resilience and agency.
