Livestock continues to be an important source of income, nutrition, and resilience for landless, small, and marginal households across rural India. However, limited access to quality breeding, animal healthcare, enterprise connectivity, and scientific management practices continue to remain a concern. As national priorities increasingly focus on livestock productivity, the Tata Trusts support efforts that strengthen sustainable and community-managed livestock systems.
The focus is on enabling Community-Based Breeding Programs (CBBPs), strengthening decentralised animal health services through Pashu Sakhis, improving value-chain linkages, and advancing biosecurity and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) awareness to support long-term livelihood resilience and public health outcomes.
The work increasingly aligns with The Government of India's One Health approach that strengthens livestock biosecurity, encourages responsible antibiotic usage, and ensures preparedness against zoonotic diseases.
The Dairy Health and Nutrition Initiative of India (DHANII) Foundation strengthens dairy-based livelihoods across states including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Maharashtra. It focuses on improving productivity, veterinary access, value chain integration, and income opportunities, particularly for women dairy farmers.
