The financial burden of serious illness extends well beyond the cost of treatment, placing immense emotional and financial strain on patients and their families. Hospitalisation, surgery, specialised procedures and expensive medicines can quickly become unaffordable for economically disadvantaged families, forcing difficult choices between timely care and financial stability.
Health insurance offers only partial relief. Many policies exclude pre-existing conditions or impose limits on hospital charges, surgical expenses and doctors' fees, rarely covering the full cost of treatment.
For vulnerable families, a medical emergency can exhaust savings, disrupt livelihoods and leave them with no option but to take on debt, making access to quality healthcare increasingly difficult.
To help bridge this gap, the Tata Trusts provide medical grants to financially disadvantaged individuals requiring specific medical treatment. While the programme primarily supports patients seeking treatment in Mumbai, requests from hospitals outside the city are also considered.
Every application undergoes a rigorous review, including a socio-economic assessment, to ensure assistance reaches those with genuine need. Grants are disbursed to the extent of funds available.
To extend the programme's reach, the Trusts work through a growing network of government, municipal, private and charitable hospitals across the country. These partnerships enable patients to access treatment at concessional rates while benefiting from the guidance of medical professionals and hospital social workers.
Partner hospitals conduct initial assessments, submit patient applications to the Trusts for consideration and monitor the utilisation of grants. Each institutional linkage is established for a defined period and is periodically reviewed to ensure continued effectiveness and accountability.
In FY 2025-26, the programme partnered with 47 linked hospitals, enabling more than 3,300 individuals to benefit from medical grants.
